If you’re planning a quinceañera, you’ve probably heard the word chambelanes a hundred times already. Maybe your daughter has a list of cousins and friends in mind, or maybe you’re wondering how on earth you’ll find enough young men who can commit to weeks of rehearsals. Either way, it helps to know exactly what chambelanes do, how many you really need and what your options are.
Here’s the guide we share with families at Fairytale Dances.
What is a chambelán?
A chambelán is a young man who escorts the quinceañera and dances with her as part of her court, or corte de honor. The damas are the young women in the court. Together, they surround the birthday girl on her big night and help make her the center of attention.
Many courts also have a chambelán de honor. He’s the quinceañera’s main escort, the one who usually partners with her in the waltz and stands closest to her throughout the celebration.
What do chambelanes actually do?
Being a chambelán is more than wearing a nice suit. Here’s what the role usually includes:
- The grand entrance. Chambelanes often help present the quinceañera to her guests, whether that’s a classic, elegant walk-in or a choreographed entrance that sets the tone for the whole night.
- The waltz. This is the traditional heart of the quince. The chambelanes lead the damas, or the quinceañera herself, through an elegant routine that guests will remember.
- The surprise dance. This is where the court gets to have fun. Chambelanes change into a second outfit and perform a high-energy mix of songs, from reggaetón and cumbia to pop and hip-hop.
- Being there for her. A good chambelán is courteous, shows up on time and makes the quinceañera feel supported, from the first rehearsal to the last song.
That last part matters more than most families expect. When one chambelán drops out or skips practices, the whole court feels it.
How many chambelanes does she need?
There’s no single right answer. Some families follow the tradition of a large court, while others prefer a smaller group that’s easier to manage. Here are a few things to think about:
- The look you want. A bigger court makes a dramatic impression on the dance floor. A smaller court lets each dancer shine and keeps the focus on the quinceañera.
- Your venue’s dance floor. Make sure everyone has room to move, especially during the waltz.
- Reliability. It’s better to have a few committed chambelanes than a big group where someone might not show up.
- Your budget. Outfits, rehearsals and coordination all grow with the size of the court.
If you’re unsure, talk it through with your choreographer. We help families figure out the court that fits their vision and their party.
Friends and family, or chambelanes for hire?
This is one of the biggest decisions in quince planning, and there’s no wrong choice. Here’s how the options compare.
Asking friends and family
Having cousins and friends in the court is meaningful, and many families love it. The challenge is scheduling. Teenagers have school, sports, jobs and family plans, and getting a whole group to every rehearsal can be stressful. If you go this route, set clear expectations early and treat rehearsals like appointments that can’t move.
Hiring professional chambelanes
Professional chambelanes and damas for hire take that worry off your plate. At Fairytale Dances, all of our chambelanes and damas are between 13 and 18 years old. They’re courteous, polished, well-mannered young dancers who train weekly at our studio, so you never have to stress about commitment from anyone in your daughter’s court.
Our chambelán packages include all the outfits for the dances: black suits, with other suit colors available, plus surprise dance outfits. Each package includes 8 rehearsals, and the surprise dance mixes up to 3 songs into one routine. Local chambelán packages start at $2,700.
A mixed court
You don’t have to choose just one. Plenty of families combine our chambelanes with their own damas, or mix in a few family members alongside our dancers. It’s a great way to keep the personal touch while making sure the dances come together.
How rehearsals work with our chambelanes
For local events, rehearsals with our chambelanes happen at your home or at our studio, Fairytale Dances. A $400 non-refundable retainer holds your date, and the rest of the package is split into two payments, due at the first and last rehearsals. Our chambelanes already know how to learn choreography quickly, which means rehearsals are focused on making your daughter look and feel amazing.
Not sure what else your quince needs? Our quinceañera choreography packages cover the waltz, surprise dance and more for families who already have their court.
Planning a quince outside Los Angeles?
We serve all of Los Angeles, and our chambelanes travel too. We travel anywhere in the USA, and we’ve already danced in 19 states plus DC, including Texas, Florida, Arizona and Illinois.
Here’s how travel chambelanes work:
- Our chambelanes start learning your dances 8 weeks before the event.
- We send weekly practice videos to your daughter and any family members in the court, and check in on Zoom.
- The chambelanes, along with a choreographer, join you in person for full-day rehearsals on the Thursday and Friday of the event week.
- Travel chambelán packages start at $3,500, with all travel expenses included.
